Where Does Rooney Fit Into Fergie's Plan As United Close in on £18m Lewandowski?

The prospect of Manchester United signing Robert Lewandowski for £18m next summer is a mouthwatering one for Sir Alex Ferguson and the club’s fans.
Lewandowski up front alongside Robin van Persie, supported by his old Borussia Dortmund teammate Shinji Kagawa, with Antonio Valencia on one flank and Ashley Young on the other.
It does, however, pose one vexing question: Where’s Wayne Rooney?

Even if you ignore Javier Hernandez and Daniel Welbeck for a moment – and that’ s not something Ferguson can easily do – Lewandowski’s arrival would, at the very least, put pressure on the automatic place that seems to have been Rooney’s by right since he moved to Old Trafford from Everton in the summer of 2004.
It would be sheer folly to discount England’s first-choice striker, and one of the greatest players of his generation, just yet. At 27, Rooney is in his prime.
But a wretched performance at Swansea on Sunday, when he was hooked by Ferguson 12 minutes from time, was hardly a one-off.
Until a sudden burst of five goals in three Premier League games at the start of the month, this had been the least prolific of Rooney’s nine seasons at United except for two years ago when he was distracted by a contract dispute that almost led to him quitting Old Trafford.
Back then, in the wake of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez leaving United, the prospect of losing Rooney as well was almost unthinkable. Not anymore.
Van Persie has changed the dynamic and Lewandowski’s arrival would change it again.
