The World Needs Geeks Not Musicians

The Voice star Will.i.am enthuses about his other love... science
As the music mogul was being raised by his single mum Debra on the mean streets of Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, he dreamed of a better life away from the gangland ghetto. But even Will never imagined that one day he would be rubbing shoulders with British royalty. So when Prince Charles called him to Clarence House to discuss a donation to the Prince’s Trust charity last June, the Black Eyed Peas star was overawed.

Will.i.am meets Prince Charles

In fact, he was so flustered he clearly didn’t quite catch the Prince of Wales’s title correctly.
Describing the “surreal” moment he met the heir to the throne, Will, 37, says: “I never thought when I was in the ghetto that one day I’d meet the Prince of England and give him a million bucks for his foundation. I thought, ‘Get outta here!’”
I meet Will at the Science Museum in London, where he is promoting the partnership that he hopes will boost the teaching of science, technology, engineering and maths for disaffected British kids.
He donated his £500,000 fee from the first series of BBC1 talent show The Voice to fund the project.
